but I don't think they continued it from there. They did have them in SC1 on the dreamcast though. they don't even show the button inputs when previewing the moves from the movelists. I was excited for 6 because stuff like that had never been in a soul calibur game before. Timings for just-inputs and frames where inputs would begin to register after a move were clearly indicated by the audible wood tap sound and the blue highlight on characters in tekken 7's training mode. I was expecting the training mode to at least include similar features to the one's from tekken 7 since Okubo san was heading it up. I want you to let that sink in and I hope it stings like sidestepping a vertical attack and still getting hit by it anyway. Even DOA5 and 6 has frame data in the training mode. I promise you, if people enjoy your game, they will be happy to learn anything and everything they can about it to improve that enjoyment.Īnyway, it really comes off to me like they just don't want to put forth the effort to program all of the frame data info onto the command list screen and are scraping the bottom of the barrel for excuses to justify this laziness. (and no, bare minimum tutorials that cover controls and basic mechanics don't count) Frame data is just math. (is that what you want?) A lot of the time, casuals don't dive deeper into fighting games not because they're too stupid to understand the technical stuff, but because they just aren't even aware that these are things they can pay attention to due to this kind of stuff rarely being brought to their attention. It's literally why they usually end up giving up on the game in a few weeks. Have the option off by default, and those who are hardcore enough to want frame data will be sure to find it and turn it on, leaving the option to be ignored and not a factor to those who don't care about frame data.Īlso, constantly protecting the casuals and newcomers from technical information hurts more than helps in the long run. (Injustice and MK being the 2 most beloved fighting games among the casual crowd) And even if you still are that worried about it, then you know what? Make it an OPTION and let the player decide if they want the command list to show frame data. And Injustice, Mortal Kombat X/11, and Killer Instinct prove you dead wrong about the inclusion of frame data putting off newcomers. No one enjoys spending hours upon hours recording footage of every single attack in the game and manually counting the frames. The second reason is that officially releasing the data would put off new comers to the series by giving the vibe that the frame data must be studied closely for the game to be enjoyable which is not what we are aiming for. If we released the data officially we would be undermining this experience that many enjoy. The first reason is that the act of figuring out frame data and sharing it within the community is fun and part of the game experience. At Project Soul, not releasing frame data is part of our policy.
