Adoption of Disney Hulu XP quadrupled in the first 30 days of its launch. It launched last month to enable advertisers to buy once and deliver to audiences across streaming, sports, entertainment and news content in one single deal. All in, Disney said it’s making a “nine-figure” investment in its ad platform.ĭisney Hulu XP– what execs described as the first step to convergence at Disney – is an early proof point of Disney’s platform strategy. The team came about l ast year, when Disney merged all of its Hulu and Disney ad tech talent and products into a single, centralized team. The team already built the video ad server and the video header bidding solution that allows programmatic buyers to compete for every Disney ad impression. The muscle behind its tech is a 500-person engineering and product team led by Jeremy Helfand, previously Hulu’s VP and head of advertising platforms. A video ad server “pressure-tested” at Hulu will be extended across the rest of Disney’s video inventory. Linear TV buyers will be able to buy across new formats more easily and with greater granularity, while programmatic buyers will finally be able to see and bid on all of Disney’s inventory.īuilding its own ad tech is a key part of Disney’s strategy. Buyers will also be able to use Disney’s audience graph to identify viewers, adding to Disney’s value prop in a cookieless world.ĭisney is courting two sets of advertisers with its platform approach. To meet these new buyer needs, Disney is in “unification mode.” The company is trying to make its inventory easier to buy across linear, CTV and digital video, whether it’s ESPN or Hulu. “That is a new way of clients doing business with us.” “Automation and data…is really the underpinning of the Disney Platform,” Valentino said. Reaching viewers across different screens and buying across the entire ecosystem has become a “business imperative,” and this year’s upfronts will require more fluidity and flexibility, said Lisa Valentino, Disney Ad Sales EVP of client solutions and addressable enablement. Its ad sales leadership shared the plan with buyers during its first-ever Platform Tech Showcase last week. As part of that plan, it created a programmatic exchange, DRAX, which will allow programmatic buyers to compete for all Disney ad impressions. Prior to Samsung Electronics, Tran was VP of marketing at Stance, a socks and underwear brand, and before that served as digital marketing and social-media lead at Taco Bell.Disney laid out an aggressive plan to unify all of its screens, automate more than half of its business and make the majority of its inventory – both linear and digital – addressable within five years. Among his projects, Tran established a partnership with Disney to bring popular characters to Samsung’s AR Emoji feature, which allows users to create a 3D emoji version of themselves by mirroring facial expressions. Tran, before joining Hulu, spent two years at Samsung Electronics where he oversaw social-media, influencer and experiential marketing in entertainment, sports and music. Earlier in his career, Crosby held multiple marketing roles at Microsoft’s Xbox division where he managed the “Halo” franchise and worked as an account supervisor at ad agencies TBWA\Chiat\Day and Wieden Kennedy. “Ryan Crosby and Nick Tran are tremendous leaders with proven track records, who will join Hulu’s talented marketing team to lead the next evolution of our Hulu brand promise and content marketing campaigns.”Īt Netflix, Crosby oversaw the team responsible for driving awareness, acquisition and viewing for Netflix original series including “Orange Is the New Black,” “House of Cards,” “Stranger Things,” “The Crown” and “Altered Carbon.” Before joining Netflix in 2015, he served as VP of consumer marketing at video-game publisher Activision Blizzard. “During a critical time for Hulu, we’re excited to bring in two new vice presidents to anchor our brand and content-marketing teams,” Kelly Campbell, Hulu’s chief marketing officer, said in announcing the hires. The two execs will join Hulu in June, reporting directly to chief marketing officer Kelly Campbell, a former longtime Google marketing executive who joined the company last summer. Tran, as VP of brand and culture marketing at Hulu, will be responsible for brand strategy, campaigns and activations and social media. Hulu has expanded its marketing executive ranks with two new hires: Ryan Crosby, formerly Netflix’s director of global creative marketing, and Nick Tran, previously head of brand culture at Samsung Electronics.Ĭrosby has been named Hulu’s VP of content marketing, overseeing marketing strategy and activities for originals, licensed programming, and live TV.

If this is you, you’ve come to the right place. They have produced contemporary opera festivals (Compōs-it Opera 2017, 2018) and new play workshops (PTC Playlab 2019). Their opera “Would You Eat Me?” will be produced by Thompson Street Opera in 2022 after winning their 2020 call for scores. Their work often explores the unbearable ordeal of being known, the magic of the mundane, and the existential dread of living in the twenty-first century. Heggie’s opera runs a bit long (roughly three hours) and loud, but Lyric’s production does it full justice.įor tickets, call Brown (he/they) is a multimedia artist working at the intersection of beauty and nonsense. But Dead Man Walking isn’t a political piece it’s a very human story of love and redemption. Although the debate on capital punishment has moved forward considerably since this opera’s premiere, the conversation on prisons remains timely. There’s no doubt that this is a thoroughly American opera, and a very contemporary one. Other bit parts are filled by promising members of the Ryan Opera Center, while the Chicago Children’s Choir opens and closes the production with their happy renditions of “He will gather us around…” Also worthy of mention is tenor Clay Hilley’s Lyric debut as Father Greenville. His performance is visceral and raw, portraying his character’s anguish with just the right mixture of anger and penitence.Īmong a large cast of minor characters, Susan Graham, who debuted the role of Sister Helen at the opera’s premiere in 2000, is noteworthy as Mrs De Rocher. Bass-baritone Ryan McKinny makes his Lyric debut as the condemned prisoner. Racette gives a strong, restrained performance, one that highlights the humility and simplicity of her character. Soprano Patricia Racette, who stars as Sister Helen, hasn’t been seen at Lyric since 2013/14, but was seen more recently at Chicago Opera Theater in Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine. Moreover, the production is assisted by a dialect coach. Later, when Sister Helen is driving to the prison, she’s stopped by a cop in full uniform on a real motorcycle. I can understand not wanting to minimize the sheer horror of the crime, but the nudity seems a bit gratuitous. The De Rocher brothers appear and kill the man, before raping and killing the woman also. Then De Rocher’s victims run onstage completely naked, and then proceed to make out on a blanket. It begins with a real car on set, headlights on, radio playing. Otherwise, much of Heggie’s vocal writing comes across as either dull and colorless or atonal and unnatural.ĭirector Leonard Foglia opts for maximum realism in this production, which is helped along by Michael McGarty’s sets and Jess Goldstein’s costumes. The most memorable and melodic music of the score, however, is the bouncy spiritual “He will gather us around, all around,” which is unlike almost everything else in the score and serves as its unifying theme. As with Jimmy Lopez’s Bel Canto, which premiered at Lyric Opera in 2015, Dead Man Walking is simply too loud, its climactic moments culminating in cacophony. It suffers from a tendency that afflicts many first-time opera composers: overstatement. The score is about one-third to one-half melodic and tonal, which makes it more delightful to listen to than, say Alban Berg or Heggie’s contemporary Ricky Ian Gordon. Fortunately, McNally infuses the libretto with enough humor to keep it from getting too heavy. We never really understand how and why this connection between nun and prisoner developed it just is. As a result, the plot feels strangely unmoored, even hollow. Along the way, De Rocher engages Sister Helen as his spiritual advisor.ĭead Man Walking explores redemption, confession, and forgiveness, but strangely shies away from social justice and the ethics of capital punishment. Based on the book of the same name by Sister Helen Prejean, with a libretto written by Terrence McNally, the story follows Joseph De Rocher from the rape and murder that landed him in jail to his execution by the State of Louisiana. Jake Heggie’s first opera premiered at San Francisco Opera in 2000. The libretto and score aren’t terribly satisfying though. But when Lyric Opera does go contemporary, it goes boldly, with big, splashy productions - and Dead Man Walking has got an excellent cast, good direction, and superbly realistic sets and costumes. Lyric Opera doesn’t put on many contemporary operas, at least not like the Windy City’s edgier companies Chicago Fringe Opera and Thompson Street Opera. The bottom line: The 2019 X5 does a little bit of everything, and does most of it very well. If you’re interested in more on the road stick, the X5 can be fitted with a sport-handling package that’s most of the way toward the inevitable X5 M to come. In any of the X5’s off-road drive modes, a torque-vectoring rear end helps keep power moving around, but ultimately it’s a matter of grip. It needs better tires than the 21-inch summer treads we slid around on through what we assume was a mosquito colony’s summer digs. Where the big BMW SUV (for now, there’s an X7 coming soon) doesn’t fare as well is off-road, though this X5 gets a new off-road driving package with underbody protection. Better tuned are BMW’s standard adaptive dampers and the optional air springs on our tester: With that setup, the 2019 X5 has a nearly unflappable poise at the kind of speeds that sometimes end in a change in custody of a driver’s license. In our middle Georgia street drive, active steering overcompensated for the X5’s long wheelbase with too much counter-steer. With 340 hp, an 8-speed automatic, a Sport drive mode, and rear-biased all-wheel drive in that Sport mode, the X5 cracks off 60-mph runs in 5.3 seconds, and never left us wanting.ĭrivetrain fluency’s just the start, though we’d probably leave off the X5’s new active steering system, which turns the rear wheels opposite the fronts at lower speeds to help the X5 corner more effectively. But we never felt impoverished, because with BMW’s brilliant single-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6, torque’s never more than a telepathic hit on the throttle away. We didn’t get to drive the social-climbing X5 xDrive50i, the one with the 456-horsepower twin-turbo V-8. The latest X3’s a great 3-Series wagon consider the new X5 an excellent 5er Touring substitute. Over time, they’ve grown ever closer to the handling of its bigger sedans. BMW has pulled off a sleight of hand with its SUVs. It’s expected the Bowers & Wilkins audio and open-pore gray wood trim will smooth that over, but will it? BMW’s generous with standard equipment, but the leather is synthetic on base models, and BMW insists on charging an annual fee for Apple CarPlay compatibility. So do safety touches such as automatic emergency braking and on most versions, all-wheel drive. It does fold down to expand the cargo area to more than 72 cubic feet, and a power tailgate comes standard. Slip off the Timberlands, and the X5 accommodates just fine, though the second row doesn’t slide or recline for added comfort. BMW’s base seats give way to superb sport seats with multi-contour adjustment they cup the front passengers well, but don’t leave much toe room for those in the second row. It rides on a long 117.1-inch wheelbase and sits about an inch longer than last year’s X5, so it’s not substantially different from the third-generation X5. It’s lush and permissive enough with interior space to suit most passengers. A mocha-brown theme has the same dark tones as the best boxes of Valrhona chocolates. And yet, BMW’s applied some loving touches of crystal to the shifter and the infotainment controller, and swathed expensive versions in supple leather dyed in delicious-looking colors. There’s some concept-car purity in the way its control pods are cordoned off by thick metallic bands, how twin digital displays dominate the dash. The cabin could tell the same story, but in this generation the X5’s cockpit has taken a handsome gel. Trim taillights point in toward that shoulder line, which lends the X5 a bit more of a muscular set of haunches. There’s a gentle bump up to the shoulder line down the X5’s flanks, just above the rear wheel well, which keeps its outline from veering into anonymity. The BMW grille’s become more bulbous in this generation, while the headlights have slimmed a bit. There’s not much new in the 2019 X5’s profile, just a different set of priorities. One of the things that the regular bunch who all want everything from SD to UHD in one package including all necessary encoders for about $50 (and even at that price I wager serious numbers will still look for hacked versions) all tend to forget is that this is all patented & licensed technology.Īdobe's Authorcore was from Sonic Solutions, who had the rights to Daikin's original Scenarist application. but since I don't work for Adobe, that part is only conjectureĪdobe could not have reverse engineered the authorcore & reworked it - not legally. the owner of the core modules that Adobe used inside Encore was sold, and the new owner removed the license, so Adobe could no longer develop EncoreĪdobe then (seemingly) made the decision not to recreate what had been licensed to build an Encore replacement. >It's sad that Adobe has abandoned Encore This does things even Scenarist cannot manage and works well on Windows 7 (I do not know about W8-10) I also wonder if Adobe would consider talking to Scenarist LLC - they bought the rights to everything back off Rovi, and not only to develop the UHD tools but Scenarist BD and Scenarist SD have also had updates and bugfixes - it is quite possible they would consider redoing the licensing to Adobe again - remember it was Rovi who killed Encore off, not Adobe or Sonic Solutions (as was)įor straight SD, Encore does work reasonably well but if an alternative is wanted people could do very well indeed with Media Chance Labs DVD-Lab Pro 2. It is expensive though unless you have an old copy of DoStudio to upgrade - not sure when it expires but there was a deal to cross grade for $17,000 to Scenarist UHD. Scenarist UHD-BD package has been around for almost a year now, Anne.
